Keyboard BulliesRecently a client had a bit of a bumpy leadership ride. He made a decision too quickly and suffered fairly heavy criticism as a result. I have been thinking about something he said: “It’s not that I mind taking the heat; that’s my job. And I’ve lived long enough to know when I made a mistake, how to apologize for it, and how to fix it. I can do all that and move on. But what bothers me, what I can’t get past just yet, is the venomous nature of the attacks coming my way.”
You are most likely a business person in a management or leadership position. You and those around you are experiencing the consequences of poor communication: lack of clarity, unnecessary complexity, and plenty of gossip and griping.
You need to make some changes, but knowing where to start isn't always obvious. You do know that what's going on is costing you time, energy, money and peace of mind. You're smart, and so are the people around you. All of you recognize the importance of communcation, but have no idea how to improve it. This is the curse of the brain-bound: educated, intelligent people who have trouble expressing themselves effectively.
